Colby-Sawyer College

The Barbara Johnson Stearns Award honors a member of the senior class who best demonstrates exemplary leadership and dedication to the college community. The award was established in 1982 by Barbara Johnson Stearns, a member of the Class of 1932, who was an outstanding example of the characteristics she chose to support and reinforce in others.

The Senior Achievement Award is presented each year to a graduate who has distinguished himself or herself through leadership in the co-curricular life of the college. The recipient of this award is nominated by faculty and staff.

The Wesson Honors Program provides intensive academic, cultural and social opportunities for the most motivated and capable Colby-Sawyer students who combine a solid work ethic and natural ability with intellectual curiosity.

The purpose of this national honor society in psychology is to encourage, stimulate and maintain excellence in scholarship and to advance the science of psychology. Members must rank in the top 35 percent of the class, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a minimum GPA of 3.0 in psychology courses. They must have completed at least three college semesters and nine credits of psychology courses and be enrolled in a program of study with strong psychological content.

Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing provides leadership and scholarship in practice, education and research to enhance the health of all people. Members must have a GPA of 3.0, rank in the top 35 percent of their graduating class, meet the expectation of academic integrity, and obtain faculty endorsements.

This award was established in memory of Ann Gulick '54, by her classmates. It is presented to the sophomore student who best exemplifies, through voluntary service, the qualities of reliability, loyalty, and unselfishness. The recipient of this award is chosen by vote of the sophomore class.

The international honor society in business, management and administration honors the academic excellence and integrity of business administration majors. Members must rank in the top 20 percent of the senior class or the top ten percent of the junior class, have a minimum cumulative GPA of a 3.0, and show a record of academic honesty and integrity. Sigma beta Delta members are expected to embrace its principles of wisdom, honorable service and the pursuit of meaningful aspirations.

Founded in 1913, the international honor society in business recognizes and encourages the academic excellence of business students enrolled in qualified business programs. Delta Mu Delta fosters the wellbeing of its individual members and the business community through lifetime membership.

The international honor society in business, The college's chapter of this honor society promotes, recognizes and encourages outstanding scholarly achievement of students enrolled in the athletic training education major. Members must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and rank in the top 35 percent of their class.

The college's chapter of this national honor society in communication studies fosters and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement in the field of communication. Members must have completed 60 credit hours, with 12 in communication studies courses, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, a minimum GPA of 3.25 in communication studies courses, and rank in the top 30 percent of their class.

The Alpha Chi Award is given to one or more graduating students who, in the eyes of the members of Alpha Chi, best exemplifies the ideas of the society - truth and character - through work at the college in support of chapter activities.

The Colby-Sawyer College chapter of this national honor society recognizes the academic achievement of juniors and seniors. To be eligible for membership a student must rank in the top ten percent of the junior or senior class and demonstrate the Alpha Chi values of truth and character.

Baccalaureate awards are presented to the graduating students in each baccalaureate program who are selected by the faculty for their interest and excellence within the major. Recipients must be full-time students and have completed at least 50 percent of their credits for graduation while attending Colby-Sawyer.

The capstone experience is interdisciplinary and differs for each student. In the capstone each graduating student demonstrates his or her knowledge by effectively communicating that knowledge to others during the Susan Colby Colgate Scholars' Symposium.

The Guy Floyd Williams Award is presented to a graduating science major who has helped to maintain and perpetuate the ideals of the college during the graduate's years at Colby-Sawyer and who, through appropriate conduct, scholarship and decorum, has exemplified the spirit of the college.

The Charger Award for Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year is given to a female who has extraordinary athletic ability and has contributed the most to her team, the College and the world of sport. As selected by the Colby-Sawyer Athletic Advisory Council, the award is presented at the Senior Awards Banquet as a token of hard work, good judgment, understanding and determination.

Each year, the Colby-Sawyer College President chooses work from the Senior Art Exhibtion for the Presidential Purchase Award.

The award for Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year is given to the student-athlete who has extraordinary athletic ability and has contributed the most to his team, the college and the world of sport. Presented at the annual Senior Award Banquet, the award recipient is determined by the Colby-Sawyer Athletic Advisory Council in recognition of his hard work, good judgment, understanding and determination.

The Male Senior Scholar-Athlete Award is given to the graduating male senior who, in the opinion of the Athletic Advisory Council, has made significant contributions to both the scholastic and varsity programs of the college.

The Wynne Jesser McGrew Scholar-Athlete Award which is given to the graduating female senior who, in the opinion of the Athletic Advisory Council, has made significant contributions to both the scholastic and varsity programs of the college.

Each year, Douglas Harp, owner of Harp and Company of Hanover N.H., and adjunct faculty member of the Fine and Performing Arts Department, chooses a work of graphic design at the Annual Senior Art Exhibtion to be included in the Susan C. Harp Collection for Graphic Design as part of the college's Permanent Collection.

Irvana Mouzinho '19 was selected by the by the Office of Admissions as the Student Ambassador of the Year.

Colby-Sawyer students from across majors along with Social Sciences & Education faculty members participated in the Carnival of Courage: Under the Sea Edition at the Newport Recreation Center on Sunday, April 14. Organized by the Child Development Club, the service-learning program featured fun, developmentally appropriate activities focused on fine and gross motor skills, including arts and crafts, sensory bins, magnetic fishing and face painting.

The 77th Eastern New England Biological Conference is an opportunity for biology majors to showcase research to fellow undergraduates from more than 40 member institutions. The conference features oral presentations, poster sessions, awards and a keynote lecture.

Under the artistic direction of adjunct faculty member Laura Dunlop Shepherd, Colby-Sawyer's finest dancers are showcased in a two-act evening of dance featuring original choreography in genres ranging from classical ballet and jazz to contemporary, tap and modern.

The Fine and Performing Arts Department hosts its annual Senior Art Exhibition featuring students' work in a variety of media including painting, drawing, ceramics and graphic design.

Recognized with the New Hampshire Presidents' Leadership Award for outstanding community service, service learning and civic engagement at Colby-Sawyer. The award is presented annually to a student or student organization that has made service an integral part of their college experience as evidenced through their contribution to the community.

Internships are field experiences designed to provide a student learning opportunity under collaborative supervision between Colby-Sawyer faculty, staff, and work site professionals. Internships offer opportunities for students to enhance their academic programs with work experience related to career interests in all industry areas in national and international settings.

The Nancy Pierce Williams Award was established by her family in her name. The $2,000 scholarship is presented annually at the Gladys Greenbaum Meyers Juried Student Art Show.

Sigma's mission is advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. To be inducted, students must be in a baccalaureate program, have a GPA of 3.0, rank in the top 35 percent of their graduating class, meet the expectation of academic integrity and obtain faculty endorsements. Only individuals who have obtained a baccalaureate degree and have made a significant contribution to the nursing profession can be inducted as Nurse Leaders.
