Krista Peace Receives the Class of 2015 Commencement Speaker Medal

2015 May 19

Krista Peace received the Class of 2015 Commencement Speaker Medal at Colby-Sawyer College Commencement on Saturday, May 9.

The Commencement Speaker Medal is presented to a student who represents the character of the graduating class and will give an inspirational and engaging speech that represents the college's values and learning outcomes.

A History and Political Studies major, Peace was decorated with the medal for standing out at Colby-Sawyer with her political engagement. Not only does Peace take action, she encourages others to do so as well. Apathy is her nemesis.

Whether as a member of the History Club, a legislative intern in the office of Congresswoman Annie Kuster (D-NH02), or as president of the club Students for Hillary, Peace advocates for what she believes will contribute to making the world a better place. Though she grew up disliking politics, mobilizing others to recognize the importance of their votes is now her passion.

"I want to see young people vote because [marriage equality, drug policies, college costs and unemployment] are our issues; these are issues that directly touch our lives," says Peace. Hers is a voice that will not be silenced.

"Krista has shown not only me, but the Colby-Sawyer community as a whole, how powerful one person can be," said one nominator. "She has, on numerous occasions, been a quality leader in our friend group, as president of the campus club Students for Hillary, as a campus tour guide and as a teaching assistant and fellow student."

Peace addressed fellow students with a speech entitled "Striving For Excellence." A transcript is available at http://www.colby-sawyer.edu/assets/pdf/2015-Student-Address.pdf
