Erin Swanson Recognized with 2014 Nursing Capstone Award

Erin Swanson, along with three other team members, received the 2014 Nursing Capstone Award during the Scholars and Leaders Ceremony held at the Sawyer Fine Arts Center Theater on Friday, May 9.

The students collaborated with the Lake Sunapee Region Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice (LSRVNA) to embark on a year-long capstone experience. They examined the knowledge, attitudes and education among health care professionals regarding starting the hospice conversation with patients and their families. The results were well received by the partnering agency and will be used to inform the development of training for nursing students in partnership with the nursing staff at the VNA about approaches to initiating hospice care. Throughout the Capstone process, the team demonstrated effective and respectful collaboration with each other, faculty, and their partnering organization.

The Capstone experience differs from major to major, but its purpose is to ensure that all seniors demonstrate their accumulated knowledge through action and effectively communicate their knowledge and actions to others in an interdisciplinary setting.
